STOCKHOLM -- Estonian mobile operator EMT has today launched their commercial EDGE service. Ericsson is sole supplier of a full commercial EDGE system to EMT. The upgrade of their existing GSM/GPRS Ericsson network in Estonia will enhance the usage of consumer and enterprise services.

Ericsson has provided a complete EDGE network infrastructure, delivering fast, packet-based mobile Internet access. Implementation into the GSM network has already begun and EDGE service is now available in selected areas in Tallinn and will be gradually expanded all-over Estonia. EDGE, an enhancement of GPRS, can handle three times the data volume of GPRS in existing spectrum bands.

"The usage of mobile data services is really on the rise today and EDGE enables solutions with significantly higher speed for consumers and gives them a taste of 3G," says Valdo Kalm, CEO of EMT.
