SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Atheros Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHR), a leading developer of advanced wireless LAN (WLAN) chipsets, today announced that Tropos Networks, the leading supplier of equipment used to build metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh networks, has selected the Atheros AR5004G 802.11g chipset to support its next generation line of MetroMesh routers. Tropos Networks has incorporated Atheros' technology for the first time into its 5210 Outdoor MetroMesh Router, 3210 Indoor MetroMesh Router and 4210 Mobile MetroMesh Router. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a Tropos Networks customer, is deploying the new line of routers to support its metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh network used by law enforcement officers and other public safety officials.

Tropos Networks' line of MetroMesh routers enables high-performance wireless mesh connectivity over very large and dynamic urban zones, as well as rural areas, and provides wireless coverage to any standard 802.11g or 802.11b client device. The company's solutions provide ubiquitous metro-scale coverage and high scalability, while ensuring minimal installation and cabling costs and rapid deployment time. Tropos' solution also allows different user groups within a municipality to run and manage separate, secure networks on a single metro-scale Wi-Fi mesh infrastructure.

"For our customers, particularly municipalities and their various departments, the ability to segment and secure the network is critical. Atheros' technology supports multiple SSIDs to create up to 16 VLANs each with a unique identifier," said Ron Sege, president and chief executive officer of Tropos Networks. "Atheros enables us to leverage our Predictive Wireless Routing Protocol (PWRP) to deliver the strong security, high subscriber capacity and reliable connectivity that our customers who run mission-critical applications on their networks depend on and demand."
